Back to the past: Cirencester History Festival returns this autumn

From Jane Austen high tea to the lost art of corn dollies: history enthusiasts are preparing to be transported into the past as Cirencester History Festival returns for its second year.

Running from 24 October to 2 November, the programme of talks, walks, film, music, and immersive experiences will be taking place across seventeen venues in Cirencester, including the Corinium Museum and New Brewery Arts.

Among the headline speakers are actor and author Ben Miller, foreign affairs expert Tim Marshall, historian Philippa Langley, and Charlie Cooper, star of This Country

Also included in the festival is the display of two exceptionally rare Roman ‘Spatha’ swords, discovered in March 2023 in Willersey, North Cotswolds. The remarkable discovery was made by detectorist Glen Manning, who will share the story behind the find alongside archaeologist Simon James. These artefacts are now exhibited at the Corinium Museum.

Festival-goers can also enjoy a wide range of family friendly events, including:

  • The Old Station Experience : a behind-the-lines tour, exhibition, listening project, and VR experience (25 October and 1 November)
  • Historical Cookery School: Jane Austen’s Regency Tea with Cotswold Cookery School at the Corinium Museum (27 October )

Councillor Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member for health, culture, and visitor experience said:
"This festival is a great opportunity to celebrate the Cotswold district’s rich history. I attended last year and I’ve already booked my tickets for an event this time. It’s a boost for the local economy and an opportunity for all of us to connect with the stories that shaped our district."
