Brickus Orpheus

Brickus Orpheus: A mythical trail made from LEGO® bricks

The Corinium Museum is launching its year-long Project Orpheus celebrations with an Orpheus Trail made with LEGO® bricks and a children’s myths workshop this Easter.

Project Orpheus is a partnership event between the Barn Theatre, New Brewery Arts and the Corinium Museum to mark the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the Orpheus Mosaic at Barton Farm in Cirencester.

Brickus Orpheus will launch at the start of the Easter holidays on April 15th and will run until November 2nd. Children will be able to find the mythical characters, animals, gods and goddesses made from LEGO® bricks in cases and around the museum. The incredible statues have been created specifically for the trail by a LEGO® master builder.

Emma Stuart, Corinium Museum Director, said: “Just over 200 years ago, a Roman mosaic showing Orpheus surrounded by animals, was found in Cirencester. Today, we are inviting people to discover the myth of Orpheus and explore his journey into the Underworld by following a special trail made from LEGO® bricks. This is an exciting opportunity for our visitors to connect with Orpheus is a very contemporary way.”

Rob Weaver, chief executive at Cotswold District Council, added: “The Orpheus Mosaic is one of Cirencester’s most significant historical discoveries, and what better way to celebrate its legacy than through the magic of LEGO®! This trail is an imaginative and interactive way to bring history to life, allowing families to step into the world of myths and legends while having fun. It’s a brilliant opportunity to spark curiosity, creativity, and a love for history in visitors of all ages.”

In the Easter family workshop on April 16, Orpheus: Myth and Music, children will learn about the Orpheus myth and the mosaic and then make and decorate their own musical wooden lyre!

As part of Project Orpheus, Corinium Museum is also launching new workshops for schools based on Greek and Roman myths aimed at the KS1 age group.

Project Orpheus is funded by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. There will be a series of events throughout the year at the Corinium Museum, the Barn Theatre and New Brewery Arts to celebrate all things Orpheus.
