Argos Alleyway-5

Community Unites to Revitalise Argos Alleyway: A Safer, Greener Space for Cirencester

Cotswold District Council is proud to announce the completion of the community-led transformation of Argos Alleyway in Cirencester. Once a neglected space, the alleyway is now a vibrant, safer, and welcoming pathway thanks to the collective efforts of local groups, volunteers, and key partners.

The success of this project reflects the collaboration between various community groups, including the Community Payback Team, South Cerney Men’s Shed, and The Salvation Army, with support from key funding bodies such as the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Streets Fund and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The alleyway’s walls have been refreshed by the Community Payback Team, who provided a clean new look as part of their initiative to give back to the community. New lighting and CCTV have been installed, greatly improving safety and visibility in the area. Adding to the aesthetic appeal, the South Cerney Men’s Shed crafted two wooden planters, placed at the entrances to the alleyway, now filled with vibrant plants from Cirencester’s Market Garden.

Cllr Lisa Spivey, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Safety, praised the transformation:

“The Argos Alleyway is now a shining example of what community collaboration can achieve. This project, initiated by Cllr Joe Harris, reduces anti-social behaviour and creates a space that residents and visitors can enjoy. It’s a true reflection of our commitment to supporting local communities.”

Nick Evans, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, added:

“I am glad our funding has helped improve this busy alleyway in Cirencester. The community identified this area as a place that made people feel unsafe. The OPCC firmly believe everyone should feel safe and comfortable to walk around their area without fear of crime. I hope the improvements in lighting and CCTV have made people feel safer to use this cut through. And at the same time has deterred criminals from loitering there or acting anti-socially.”

This project was made possible by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Streets Fund and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which focus on enhancing community safety and fostering local development.

This project is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. Cotswold District Council extends its thanks to everyone involved and looks forward to seeing this revitalised space enjoyed for years to come.
