Cotswold Christmas and New Year waste collection timetable announced

Due to no collections taking place on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, every household will experience some change to their waste collection days, details of which are already published on the Council’s website: www.cotswold.gov.uk/binday.

Residents can also find their revised collection dates on the annual waste and recycling calendar which can also be viewed, downloaded or printed from the website.

Waste, recycling and food waste collections due on Monday 25, Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 will run two days later than normal, while collections that would be due on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 will be running a day late. 

Waste, recycling and food waste collections for the week commencing Monday 1 January will run a day behind for all households, with Ubico crews out working Tuesday to Saturday instead of the usual Monday to Friday. 

The Council has taken the decision to suspend its garden waste service again over the Christmas and New year fortnight so that resources can be allocated to the refuse and recycling rounds.

Councillor Mike Evemy, Cabinet Member for waste and recycling at Cotswold District Council, said: “With the extra waste produced by many households at this time of year, we are suspending the garden waste collection for two weeks as we did last year.  This allows the vehicles and crews to work on the refuse and recycling rounds, so that we can clear the extra waste promptly for our residents. 

“To help maximise the amount households can recycle, we’re reminding residents to squash their plastic bottles, cartons and cans so they can get more in their white bag and help us get more on the trucks. Crews will also collect extra materials for the first full collection after Christmas Day as long as items are sorted and left neatly at the kerbside. All cardboard must be broken down so that it can fit through the openings on the recycling vehicle. Unflattened and oversized boxes will be left.”

“While we want to encourage as much recycling as possible, inevitably people will have a little more rubbish at this time of year. To help residents manage this, we will also accept an extra bag or two of refuse which can be placed beside the black bin at the first collection after Christmas Day.”

The Council is reminding residents that refuse and recycling needs to be presented by 7am, particularly on their revised collection days, as crews may get to properties earlier than normal.

When the garden waste service resumes on Monday 8 January, the Council will pick up real Christmas trees for households with a garden waste licence on their first scheduled collection day following the break in service. Trees can be left whole at the kerbside.

To make it easier for all households to dispose of their trees, the Council is also partnering again with three local garden centres to provide convenient drop off points:

• Dobbies Garden Centre, Cirencester, GL7 6EU
• Batsford Garden Centre, Batsford, GL56 9QB
• Hillier Garden Centre, Lechlade, GL7 3DP

Trees need to be dropped off by Thursday 18 January and will go on to be composted.

Alternatively, real Christmas trees and excess recycling can be taken to one of Gloucestershire County Council’s Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), including the Fosse Cross site near Cirencester. The HRCs are shut on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
