Christmas Waste Changes 2024

Cotswold District Council Announces Festive Waste Collection Updates

With the holiday season fast approaching, Cotswold District Council has shared its updated waste and recycling collection schedule to ensure residents can prepare for the festivities.

Key Changes:

1. Revised Collection Days:

2. Garden Waste Service Suspension:

  • The garden waste collection service will pause from Tuesday, December 24, 2024, resuming on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. This allows additional resources to manage the increased recycling and refuse during the holidays.

3. Additional Waste Allowance:

  • To help households manage excess waste, crews will accept up to two extra refuse bags on the first collection after Christmas.

4. Christmas Tree Recycling:

  • If you subscribe to the garden waste service, you can leave your real Christmas tree at the kerbside for collection. Please follow these steps:
    • Cut your tree into manageable sections and place the pieces in your green bin, ensuring the lid can close.
    • For smaller trees (6 feet and under), cut them in half.
    • For trees over 6 feet, cut them into three sections.
  • To make it easier for all households to dispose of their trees, the Council is also partnering again with three local garden centres to provide convenient drop off points:
    • Dobbies Garden Centre, Cirencester, GL7 6EU
    • Batsford Garden Centre, Batsford, GL56 9QB
    • Hillier Garden Centre, Lechlade, GL7 3DP

5. Household Recycling Centres:

  • The Fosse Cross Household Recycling Centre will operate on its usual schedule, except for closures on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Visits must be pre-booked via the Gloucestershire Recycles website

Residents are reminded to present waste by 7:00 AM on their collection day and to maximise recycling space by flattening boxes and squashing cans.

Robert Weaver, chief executive of Cotswold District Council, said, "We understand how busy the festive season can be for our residents, and we’ve tailored our waste and recycling services to make it easier for everyone to manage their holiday waste responsibly. By planning ahead and utilizing the extra allowances, we can ensure a greener and cleaner start to the new year for the Cotswolds."
