Cotswold District Council commits to supporting Afghan refugees
Councillor Joe Harris, Leader of Cotswold District Council, said "The harrowing scenes witnessed in Afghanistan are a reminder of how lucky we are to live in a peaceful country.
"As a council, we are fully committed to supporting Afghan refugees find a safe new home and resettle in the UK. We will be playing our part to support the Government's plan to help Afghan refugees, which initially aims to help those most in need, particularly those who have been helping British operations in Afghanistan by supporting our military. We have already been working in partnership with the other councils across Gloucestershire to identify homes and prepare support for these refugees over the past few months.
“For the initial refugees coming into the country we have pledged to home 35 families across the Gloucestershire partnership and we will be working hard to make sure the Cotswolds plays its part in providing those homes and homes for the wider resettlement scheme which is due to be organised by Government shortly.
“We helped over 80 Syrian families to settle across Gloucestershire in recent years which we are very proud to have done.
“Across the county, we are looking for 3 or 4 bedroom homes to help these vulnerable families. If you have a home available please consider offering it for use in this scheme. More information can be found on our website”
