Cotswold District Council embraces Fairford Neighbourhood Development Plan

Cotswold District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Regulatory Services has agreed to make the Fairford NDP after a significant number of residents supported the proposal in a referendum held in May 2023.

Cllr Juliet Layton, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regulatory Services, said: “The Council's commitment to empowering residents and promoting sustainable growth is reflected in this innovative and forward-thinking plan. It encapsulates the collective aspirations and priorities of the Fairford community, setting a clear roadmap for development and conservation over the next decade.

“It’s fantastic to see such a clear response from the community. The plan is wide-reaching, allocating a housing site, protecting valued local green spaces and providing important local direction on heritage, flooding and climate change. 

“The Fairford NDP sets out a positive vision for the town and provides a unique opportunity for residents to actively contribute to the shaping of their community, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their town's future. I would like to pass on my congratulations to Fairford Town Council and the Neighbourhood Plan steering group, whose continued hard work has delivered this plan.”

The Fairford Neighbourhood Development Plan is the result of 10 years of work by a dedicated group of people on the Fairford Steering Group, comprising members of Fairford Town Council, Fairford Community Voice, residents and other organisations.

Key features of the Fairford Neighbourhood Development Plan include:

• Sustainable Development: The Fairford NDP encourages the implementation of sustainable building practices, green spaces, and improved infrastructure to enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
• Housing and Community: The Fairford NDP addresses the critical need for affordable and diverse housing options, aiming to cater to the evolving needs of the community.
• Heritage and Environment: Recognising the historical significance of Fairford's architectural and cultural heritage, the Fairford NDP seeks to safeguard and celebrate these assets, ensuring a sustainable and beautiful town for current and future generations.
• Infrastructure and Transportation: The Fairford NDP focuses on enhancing connectivity within and beyond the town, supporting active transportation networks, and reducing carbon emissions through thoughtful planning.

Joint Chairs of the Fairford Neighbourhood Development Plan steering group, Jon Hill and Margaret Bishop, said: "We are delighted that the Fairford Neighbourhood Development Plan, has finally been adopted. This is the culmination of 10 years work and much consultation, and a great moment for the Fairford community. 

“With this plan in place, we are making sure that the future growth of our town is in line with the aspirations and needs of our residents. We hope that the Fairford NDP will protect the riverside area and green spaces, bring increased sewage capacity before new housing, and direct future development to higher ground which doesn’t increase flood risk. We want to lead the way with sustainable development and we hope to work closely with Cotswold District Council to transform these goals into a reality."
