Cotswold District Council leader Mike Evemy reacts to Government update on Local Government Reorganisation
Cotswold District Council leader Mike Evemy has responded to news that the Government is "minded to" confirm a single unitary authority for Gloucestershire.
In an update shared with council leaders and chief executives yesterday (29 October), followed by a statement to parliament, the Minister for Local Government, Devolution and Growth Jim McMahon said all decisions made in July have been withdrawn but he was working to confirm the decision for Gloucestershire before Christmas.
The Minister said that in the event the decision is confirmed, elections to the new authority would take place in May 2028, ahead of vesting in April 2029. Elections to Cotswold District Council will go ahead on existing boundaries in May 2027.

In response to the Minister's update, Cllr Evemy said:
"It is helpful to have greater clarity from the Government on the timetable for local government reorganisation in Gloucestershire. But while the delay provides more time to develop proposals for the future, it also creates challenges, including preparing for district council elections next year alongside ongoing financial pressures. I would urge the Government to put every effort into supporting councils through this transition.
“Despite that uncertainty, Cotswold District Council is in a strong position. We have a balanced budget, a new Local Plan progressing towards examination, and major investments underway to improve services. We’ve taken decisions over recent years with one eye on local government reorganisation, ensuring that whether responsibilities transfer to a new council in the future or remain with us for longer than expected, we are well placed to succeed and to continue delivering for our residents, businesses, and all members of our wider Cotswold community."
