Cotswold District Council leading the way on menopause support for staff
Cotswold District Council is proud to announce the adoption of its updated Menopause Policy, aimed at supporting employees who are affected by menopause. This progressive step reflects the Council’s commitment to fostering a workplace culture that is inclusive and supportive.
The updated Menopause Policy is designed to increase awareness of menopause, reduce stigma, and provide practical guidance to managers and colleagues. The policy outlines the steps the Council will take to ensure that those experiencing menopause receive appropriate adjustments and support, allowing them to thrive in their professional roles.
This comes as part of the Council’s wider commitment to raising awareness and support for the menopause for those living in the district as well as staff.
Key provisions of the policy include:
- Awareness Training: To increase understanding of menopause across the organisation, with a focus on its effects and how to offer support to those experiencing it.
- Workplace Adjustments: Measures such as flexible working hours, provision of suitable facilities, and adjustments to workloads and duties will be available to help affected employees manage symptoms while maintaining productivity.
- Open Conversations: Encouraging a culture where employees feel comfortable discussing menopause with managers and colleagues, promoting a stigma-free environment.
Cllr Claire Bloomer, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living and Inclusion, emphasised the importance of the policy in ensuring that all employees feel supported throughout their careers. She said, "Menopause can be a challenging time for many, both physically and mentally. It’s crucial that we, as an employer, provide a supportive and understanding environment where staff feel confident that their needs will be met. This is part of the Council’s wider work to tackle inequality around menopause.
“This policy is about removing any barriers to success and ensuring that no one feels isolated or overlooked. We are proud to be leading the way in creating a more compassionate workplace for everyone.
“We hope by implementing this, other employers will follow our example and ensure all staff feel supported in the workplace."
The Council recognises that menopause is a natural life stage that can have significant impacts on an individual’s health and wellbeing. By adopting this updated policy, Cotswold District Council is setting a positive example for other local authorities and businesses, reinforcing its commitment to promoting employee wellbeing and creating an inclusive working environment.
October is Menopause Awareness Month, a global initiative to raise awareness and promote better support for those experiencing menopause.
In recognition of this, Councillor Claire Bloomer will once again host the Menopause Fayre later this month, following the success of last year's event. The Fayre will provide valuable resources, expert talks, and the opportunity to engage in conversations about menopause, further supporting the community and raising awareness across the district.
The Menopause Fayre will take place on World Menopause Day, Friday 18 October. You can find out more information here.
