Cotswold District councillors share advice for their younger selves

This year's theme for International Women's Day is 'Give to Gain'.

Sunday 8th March marks International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme is ‘Give to Gain’ and, with this in mind, the Council’s district councillors share the advice they would give to their younger selves.

Clare Turner, Cotswold District Councillor, Blockley Ward:

Clare Turner

“Be as you are. Be as you are but, perhaps, be a little kinder to yourself.

Start sooner. The moment rarely starts to feel more comfortable than it does right now so don’t wait to feel 100% ready. Just start anyway.

See above but also accept that procrastination followed by adrenaline fuelled bursts of activity when a deadline looms, is how you, personally, will be hugely productive. It’s OK.

Celebrate, champion and listen to the women around you; collectively & collaboratively you will do amazing things.

You don’t need to heed unsolicited advice. As a woman, you’ll receive plenty of it.”

Laura Hall-Wilson, Cotswold District Councillor, Tetbury with Upton:

Laura Hall-Wilson

“I would tell my younger self to have the courage of my convictions and never listen to negative voices telling you something is not possible - you can do anything if you put in hard work and energy! Women are achieving amazing things but often need more convincing than our male counterparts to step into leadership roles, we often feel the time isn’t right or we’re not ready. You are ready for anything! This year's theme of "give to gain" is really important for political leadership, have the courage to stand and remember that giving back to your community gains huge reward - this is your prompt to step forward and do it!”

Juliet Layton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, South Cerney Village

Juliet Layton-3

"Trust your instincts earlier and stop waiting for perfect conditions. Say yes to opportunities that scare you, because they’re usually the ones that shape you. Don’t shrink to make others comfortable; the right people value your voice. Invest in friendships that feel mutual and let go of those that drain you. Save more, worry less, and understand that setbacks aren’t signs of failure but part of the path. Protect your time, your energy, and your boundaries. You’re allowed to change direction without apology. Most of all, be kinder to yourself — you’re doing better than you think."
