Changing Places facilities-3

Cotswold welcomes four new Changing Places facilities across the district!

In 2022 Cotswold District Council was awarded funding of over £160,000 from the Government, to create accessible toilet facilities for people with severe disabilities.

Using the funding of £162,500, plus additional investment from the venue owners, four new Changes Places facilities have been delivered in the district.

The final of the four new Government-funded Changing Places facilities opened earlier this month at the Cotswold Country Park and Beach (Shorncote).

The other three locations of the new Changing Places facilities are at Abbey Grounds (Cirencester), Birdland Park and Gardens (Bourton-On-The-Water) and Cotswold Farm Park (Guiting Power).

Prior to this investment, there was only one Changing Places toilet in the district, at Westonbirt Arboretum.

Changing Places toilets are larger accessible toilets for people who cannot use standard facilities. They are equipped with hoists, curtains and adult-sized changing benches, and can support both users, their families and carers. With more equipment and extra space disabled users will be safer and more comfortable when using the facilities.

Cllr Claire Bloomer, cabinet member for communities, said, “I’m so pleased this project has been completed and we can now offer four more fully accessible toilet facilities across our district.

“Standard accessible toilets often fall short of meeting the needs of all individuals with disabilities and for too long the lack of suitable toilet facilities has meant disabled people have faced major difficulties when they go out, travel or shop.

“Our public spaces and visitor attractions offer wonderful opportunities to explore our beautiful district, and it's only fair that everyone should be able to enjoy them. We aim to make our towns and attractions welcoming and accessible for all, and this funding will help enhance the quality of life for many of our residents and visitors."

Karen Hoe, Changing Places Manager at Muscular Dystrophy UK, said, “We are delighted to see this new Changing Places Toilet open at Cotswold Country Park and Beach. We recognise the huge difference this will make being able to access this and be able to   have a day out without having to worry about how their toilet needs will be met.”
