Orpheus Myth and Music

Easter adventures at the Corinium Museum: creativity, culture & family fun

The Corinium Museum is turning up the fun this Easter with a line-up of hands-on workshops  – each with a unique historical twist.

From designing an Anglo-Saxon brooch to having a go at writing Shakespearian prose, families are invited to dive into a world of creativity with sessions in art, craft, music, poetry and pottery.  Sessions take place until April 24 and run between 10am – 12 noon and whether little ones love to get messy with paint or tap into their inner bard, there’s something for every curious mind to enjoy.

  • 15/04: Roman Swords & Shields Create your own Roman sword and shield inspired by local archaeological finds
  • 16/04: Orpheus: Myth and Music Learn about the Orpheus myth, design your cover art, and then assemble your very own quality wooden lyre
  • 17/04: Mini Mosaics Get inspiration from the original Roman mosaics in Cirencester and then create your own
  • 22/04: Anglo-Saxon Brooch Workshop Bring your young designers along to create their own glittering brooches based on some examples in our collections
  • 23/04: Happy Birthday to The Bard! Explore Shakespeare's use of language, create an Elizabethan ruff, and write some brilliant prose with our quill pens and ink
  • 24/04: Prehistory Pottery Workshop Learn the techniques ancient people used to decorate their distinctive pots, and try your hand at making your very own vessel

Additionally, the Brickus Orpheus trail will launch at the start of the Easter holidays and will run until November 2nd. Children will be able to find the mythical characters, animals, gods and goddesses made from LEGO® bricks in cases and around the museum.

This trail is part of Project Orpheus, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the Orpheus Mosaic in Cirencester and the incredible statues have been created specifically for the trail by a LEGO® master builder.

About the Corinium Museum

The Corinium Museum is located at the heart of Cirencester, the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’. The principal collection consists of the highly significant finds from the Roman town of Corinium. However, the museum today is much more than that, taking you on a journey through time and charting the development of the Cotswolds from its prehistoric landscape to the modern day.
