Honouring March's Unsung Heroes: Exceptional Individuals Making a Difference
A man who delivers food, clothing and aid to the homeless in his van, a community repair café and the founder of an organisation that provides free meals for those in need are the latest remarkable recipients of the Unsung Heroes Awards.
Gerry Watkins, Michael Smedley – along with his team of Repair Café volunteers - and Joanne Maw were recognised in a ceremony in the chamber at Cotswold District Council, ahead of a full council meeting on Wednesday, March 19.
The Unsung Heroes Awards shine a light on the everyday community heroes in the Cotswold District, whose acts of kindness and generosity enrich the lives of many.
Gerry has dedicated years to supporting the homeless through his "Food for Thought" van, which provides food, clothing, and essential aid to those in need.
Michael and the Repair Cafe Volunteers at St James’ Church Repair Cafe helps reduce waste and foster a welcoming community space in Chipping Campden.
While Joanne, founder of Feed The Community, which offers free meals to families and individuals in need, ensures that everyone has the chance to enjoy a warm meal. She also organises a Christmas party with gifts for children, and distributes Easter eggs at Easter
Cllr Nikki Ind, chair of the council, said: "These individuals truly embody the spirit of community and generosity. Their selfless actions have had a profound impact on so many lives, and they deserve to be celebrated for their incredible dedication. It’s inspiring to see people like Gerry, Michael, and Jo making such a meaningful difference. We are proud to honour them as our Unsung Heroes."

What their nominations said:
Gerry Watkins: Founder of the "Food for Thought" van, providing food, clothing, and support to the homeless and vulnerable. Gerry has spent years supporting those in need, previously starting the Yellow Bus project before launching his current initiative. He recently helped a homeless individual find safe accommodation on a freezing night, demonstrating his deep commitment to the cause.
Michael Smedley & Repair Cafe Volunteers: Leaders of St James’ Church Repair Cafe in Chipping Campden, a hub that welcomes the community while saving items from landfill. The cafe, run by a team of dedicated volunteers, provides a space where people can get their possessions repaired while enjoying homemade cakes and tea. Michael actively promotes the initiative through local media, ensuring its continued success.
Joanne Maw: Founder of Feed The Community, a project that serves free monthly two-course hot meals to families and individuals in need. Jo also organises a Christmas party with gifts for children and distributes Easter eggs at Easter. Her work ensures that those less fortunate can experience the joy of dining out, which many take for granted.
