Cirencester Leisure Centre refurbishments

Improvement works have started at Cirencester Leisure Centre

In partnership with our not-for-profit leisure providers, Freedom Leisure, Cirencester Leisure Centre is undergoing significant refurbishment and is due to be completed by the end of summer.

The exciting plans will benefit everyone in the community and will modernise the facilities as well as adding the latest equipment and technology to enhance a visit to the Leisure Centre and provide an improved user experience.

Other areas of focus during the works are the improvements to the accessible facilities, providing better changing and fitness space to those needing extra support.

The improvements are being funded by Cotswold District Council and are based on proposals made by Freedom Leisure when the new leisure contract was agreed in 2023.

The works started on Friday 10 May and are due for completion on Monday 19 August (subject to change).

The improvements include:

  • Refurbished changing rooms and showers
  • New water play features for younger swimmers on poolside
  • State-of-the-art indoor cycling studio
  • New flooring for existing group exercise studio
  • Assisted gym area to be created

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, Cabinet Member for Health, Leisure and Parking, said, “As a member of the Leisure Centre myself, I'm really looking forward to the works being completed and being able to use the new facilities.

“These improvements were proposed by Freedom Leisure as part of the tender process when we changed leisure providers last summer. One of our Council priorities is to deliver good services to our residents, and the improvements proposed by Freedom Leisure really reflect that.

“It’s incredibly important for us to invest in the health and wellbeing of our residents, and these improvements will offer more activities to residents as well as improving the overall general experience of using the Leisure Centre!”

Lee Thomas, Freedom Leisure Regional Manager, added, “We are very pleased to have begun the work at Cirencester and we are confident that all our customers will be delighted with the outcomes with many improvements and some new and exciting additions to our products and services.

"It is thanks to our excellent working relationship with Cotswold District Council that we have been able to progress with our initial plans and they really underpin what we as a charitable not-for-profit organisation are all about – improving lives through leisure and putting people above profit.”

Bourton-on-the-Water Leisure Centre will be undergoing a similar refurbishment later this year with new water play features, improvements to the studio and the accessible changing facilities, as well as an enhancement to the catering facilities.

Improving residents’ access to health and wellbeing facilities is part of our wider Active Cotswold programme. As part of this programme, we have introduced Community Fit Kits, wellbeing walk leader training as well as our partnership with Mr Motivator offering free membership to online fitness
