Bourton leisure centre 2003 - 2026

Looking back: the leisure centre that changed the north Cotswolds

More than 25 years ago, work began on a £2.4 million project that would leave a lasting legacy for the north Cotswolds and give thousands of local children the opportunity to learn to swim close to home.

Today, Bourton-on-the-Water's leisure centre is woven into the fabric of community life. Numerous children have taken their first swimming strokes there, families have spent countless hours poolside, and local residents have used the facilities to stay active and healthy. Even this summer, almost 600 children are signed up to learn to swim at the centre -  continuing a success story that began more than two decades ago.

For our latest journey back through the council's history, we revisit the story behind one of the district's most valued community facilities and the role Cotswold District Council played in bringing it to life.

Back in 2001, residents welcomed the news that construction would begin on a new leisure centre on Station Road. Although the doors would not officially open until 2003, the project represented a major investment in the future of the north Cotswolds.

For the first time, local people would have access to a modern swimming pool and fitness centre on their doorstep. Before then, many families travelled to Cirencester, Witney or Stratford-upon-Avon to access similar facilities. The new centre transformed access to swimming, fitness, and recreation for communities across the area.

The £2.4 million development, worth almost £5 million in today's money, was primarily funded by Cotswold District Council, with additional support from local benefactors and community fundraising, including £25,000 from Bourton-on-the-Water Parish Council.

Since then, people of all ages have passed through its doors, whether for swimming lessons, fitness classes, community activities, or celebrations.  There have been hundreds of thousands of visits - the dance studio alone has hosted countless classes, events, and birthday parties over the years.

The centre remains owned by Cotswold District Council and is currently operated by Freedom Leisure. While management arrangements have changed over time, the council's commitment to the facility has not. That commitment continues today, with more than £200,000 set to be invested in new gym equipment to help ensure the centre keeps meeting the needs of residents for years to come.

Nick Charlton, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, said Freedom Leisure was proud to have operated Bourton Leisure Centre on behalf of Cotswold District Council since August 2023.

"From teaching hundreds of children to swim each week to providing modern fitness facilities, activities and community spaces, the centre plays a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of local residents,” he said.

"Looking back, it's clear just how important the decision to build the leisure centre was for the north Cotswolds.  It's a facility with a proud history and, with continued investment and improvements, we're excited to build on its legacy as we continue our mission of improving lives through leisure."

From swimming lessons and gym sessions to community events and family celebrations, Bourton Leisure Centre stands as a lasting example of how investment in local facilities can benefit generations of residents.
