New electric vehicle chargers driving Cotswold residents to go green

Cotswold District Council has taken another step in its drive towards a greener future with the installation of 24 new electric vehicle chargers in car parks across the district.

Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, and Tetbury, are the latest locations to be equipped with this infrastructure, with chargers already available in Cirencester, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Northleach.

It means more residents across the district now have convenient access to charging infrastructure.

New charger locations include:

  • Maugersbury Road Car Park, Stow-on-the-Wold – four chargers
  • Old Market Way Car Park, Moreton-in-Marsh – four chargers
  • West Street Car Park, Tetbury – six chargers

Plans are also underway to install 10 chargers at the Brewery Car Park in Cirencester. All locations are open to the public 24/7, with overnight parking offered free of charge.

Cllr Mike McKeown, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Digital, said that the new chargers would address some of the key barriers to people buying electric cars in the Cotswold district. He added that placing the new facilities in town-centre car parks and near residential areas would help bridge the equity gap in access to electric vehicles by making charging more practical and inclusive for households without off-street parking.

The rollout is part of the council’s wider commitment to tackling the climate emergency. Climate Emergency UK recently showed the council had nearly doubled its climate score (an assessment on the action the council’s taken towards net zero). This placed the council in the top 15% of councils nationwide and second in Gloucestershire for climate improvement. Notable progress was made in the transport category, where innovative solutions like the expansion of EV infrastructure played a key role.

Cllr McKeown said: “This result reflects the hard work and commitment of our officers and members. We’ve embedded climate action into everything we do, from infrastructure to community engagement, and we’re seeing the results.

“The installation of these new electric vehicle charging points is another positive step in the right direction, as well as a practical way to support both residents and visitors in making the switch to electric vehicles. One of the most effective actions households can take to combat climate change is replacing petrol or diesel cars with electric alternatives. They also have significantly lower running costs, making them a financially attractive option for many.

“Cotswold District Council is proud to be leading this change locally; of the 150 publicly accessible EV chargers across the district, the council has installed 49.”

Notes to editors

Electric vehicle adoption continues to grow in the UK, EV sales are up 33% so far this year.

Transport is the largest source of carbon emissions in the Cotswolds.

This rollout has been made possible thanks to government funding, covering 50% of the installation costs, with the council match funding any grant.
