Solar panels are saving money and the planet across the Cotswold District

A year on since Cotswold District Council teamed up with MakeMyHouseGreen (MMHG) residents are on track to save nearly £450,000 across the district by installing energy efficient measures in their homes.

The Council’s partnership with MMHG, a specialist provider for domestic solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, home storage batteries and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, has given residents the confidence to switch to greener energy systems.

Since the partnership began last autumn residents are now saving an estimated £17,986 and 14,684kg of carbon per year. And as these energy efficient products have a lifespan of 25 years, residents will make a saving of £449,650 collectively.

With household energy usage a key cause of climate-changing greenhouse gases, the Council hopes the MMHG platform will continue to propel householders interested in switching to low-carbon renewable energy sources to explore solar as a potential option for their homes.

Residential rooftop solar panels and batteries have the potential to reduce household electricity costs and carbon emissions with a good payback period and percentage rate of return that makes it an attractive investment.

Solar and batteries are highly complementary to other investments such as EVs and heat pumps by reducing their running costs and may also increase the value of a house and its Energy Performance Certificate rating.

Cllr Mike McKeown, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Sustainability, said: “We are pleased our partnership with MMHG has given residents across the Cotswolds the confidence to invest in rooftop solar panels.

“We found last year 60% of homeowners say they are likely to consider installing solar, but research suggests the biggest barrier to people going ahead is the perceived risk involved. With so much information out there, it can be difficult for residents to feel confident they are dealing with credible installers.

“We are pleased to see this scheme has helped residents to take action to contribute to a greener future and save money on their household bills in the long run.”
