Toilets on the Market Square in Stow to stay open
Cotswold District Council’s Cabinet decided unanimously to support keeping the Market Square toilets in Stow-on-the-Wold open, following discussions with Stow Town Council and receipt of a petition signed by over 1,000 people.
The Council has decided to close the toilets at the Maugersbury Road car park in Stow instead.
As a result of funding cuts and inflation, the Council no longer has the resources to keep all its public toilets open. Cabinet decided to maintain just one set of toilets in each settlement, except in Bourton-on-the-Water, at its meeting in February.
The Council had proposed to close the toilets on the High Street in Stow-on-the-Wold and keep the toilet facility at the Maugersbury Road car park open but has reversed that decision following representations from individuals, Stow Town Council and receipt of the petition in support of retaining the Market Square toilets.
Cllr Mike Evemy, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “Cotswold District Council's challenging financial position has not changed, so we have to consider proposals to streamline our services. We are not required to provide public toilets, but recognise their importance to residents and visitors to our market towns.
“I’m pleased that we have been able to retain the Market Square toilets in Stow as the representations have shown how much they are valued by residents and visitors to the town.”
