Unsung Heroes Awards-2

Local Heroes Honoured in First Round of Unsung Heroes Awards

Four extraordinary individuals have been celebrated as the first winners of the Unsung Heroes Awards, honouring local heroes who tirelessly work behind the scenes to make our communities better. Congratulations to Janne Bishop, Daphne Walton, Kelly Foreshew, and Brian McTear, whose dedication and selfless service have earned them this well-deserved recognition.

The Unsung Heroes Awards shine a light on the heart and soul of our district—the volunteers who generously give their time, energy, and care to support others. From leading community programmes to providing essential care and creating safe spaces for all, these four heroes embody the spirit of giving back.

Meet Our Unsung Heroes:

  • Janne Bishop

Janne's nomination highlighted her as a true champion for memory care, describing how she has been the driving force behind a singing club in Bourton-on-the-Water. This club, offering a lifeline to individuals with memory issues, runs year-round without breaks—even during holidays—which showcases Janne’s unwavering commitment. It was felt that Janne's tireless dedication extends beyond this, as she also co-leads the weekly “Coffee, Cake, and Chat” group in Great Rissington, a popular hub for local residents. Her efforts provide not only fun activities but also vital connections that bring the community together.

  • Daphne Walton

Daphne's nomination described her as a lifelong advocate for children, highlighting how she has transformed youth activities in both Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden. As a dedicated Girlguiding leader, Daphne founded the Moreton-in-Marsh Rainbows and leads the Brownie units in both Moreton and Chipping Campden. It was noted that Daphne’s boundless energy and warm smile shine through as she spends her evenings ensuring local children are safe, engaged, and having fun. For Daphne, no task is too big, and no child is ever left behind.

  • Kelly Foreshew

Kelly's nomination portrayed her as a shining example of compassionate care, emphasising the significant impact she has made as a carer in Lechlade. It was noted that Kelly consistently goes above and beyond to provide elderly residents with the support and companionship they need. Her presence has become a pillar of trust and reassurance for those she cares for, making their lives a little brighter every day.

  • Brian McTear

Brian's nomination highlighted his remarkable 16 years of service, including over a decade as Chair of the Kingscote Parish Village Hall Committee. Though he recently stepped down, it was felt that Brian left an indelible mark on the community. His leadership, from organising local events to overseeing the maintenance of the village hall, has shaped the very heartbeat of Kingscote. Through his efforts, he created a thriving space where residents can gather, celebrate, and connect.

Cllr Nikki Ind, Chair of the Council, said, “I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted a nomination for the first round of our Unsung Heroes Awards.
